The Hopeful Journey of Patience is a powerful comic created by young asylum seekers through Barnardo’s Triangles programme. Designed to bring hope to children arriving in the UK without speaking English, the comic reflects the real experiences of isolation, fear, and adapting to a new country.
The project was born from the idea of helping other young asylum seekers feel less alone. Over several weeks, the young creators shared their personal journeys, co-designing the character Patience, a boy with healing powers, to represent their own emotional and physical struggles. Through collaboration, they crafted a story that addresses the challenges of seeking safety while delivering a message of hope.
In The Hopeful Journey of Patience, Patience and his best friend Sufjan flee their dangerous homeland, unsure if they’ll ever find safety. As they face fear, loneliness, and language barriers in a new land, Patience’s magic helps heal others, but can he find the strength to heal himself? Can they hold on to their dreams?
The comic, nominated for the Modern Slavery Award, offers reassurance to those in similar situations: “You are not alone.”
